Special fx had the pleasure of enhancing the
opulent environment at The J.W. Marriott Las Vegas in Summerlin, Nevada. The architect's
and designer's goal for the property was to have the artwork appear as
part of a personal collection. To achieve this goal, Special fx commissioned
art for the public spaces, guest rooms, casino, spa, conference facility,
and restaurants that turned a beautiful hotel into a lavish estate.
Among one of the jewels of this property, the spa exemplifies not only
the quality of art, but the intended appearance of exclusivity.
The nautical Roman friezes, adorning two walls of the spa, are replete
with tiled marine imagery. Blue and gold tiles depict ships at sea, aquatic
plants, breaking waves, starfish, turtles, and a distinguished profile
of a man’s head calling to mind the Roman god of the sea, Neptune.
The entrance to the spa displays a wall sculpture also appropriating
imagery from antiquity with three partially realized female figures standing
within a temple. The architectural elements of the temple, like the figures,
appear pieced together.
The spa is just one of many magnificent spaces enhanced by Special fx
at The J.W. Marriott. To illustrate the enormous scope of this project,
Special fx also provided 1400 framed custom prints of commissioned collages
for the guest rooms, 500 framed original paintings, and mixed media for
public spaces throughout the resort.
Special fx also provided large wall tapestries, hundreds of accessories,
and finally, a custom designed tiled fountain.
