Greektown Casino

Special fx’s efforts to transport an individual from the streets of Detroit to the post-modern environs of a casino resplendent with classical motifs was realized in the Greektown Casino project.

The dark wood paneled High Limit VIP Lounge accented with portals, fashions large handmade gold-leafed ceramic urns adorned with Mediterranean grapes and vines.

Interspersed between the portals are four deep-set shelves displaying smaller custom hand blown vessels that reflect the jewel tones of the room and are backlit against custom color infused textured glass.

Resting against a wall in the High Limit Games Area is a relief punctuated with partially carved male figures that compete with the angular background that seems to outline the contours of the figures.
The cornice, crowning the relief, is carved with a pastiche of classical and modern abstracted organic and geometric shapes.

Large male heads flank the frieze, and like the partially carved figures, seem to bear the weight of the cornice above. Finally, the entablature is spot lit with five evenly spaced spotlights that serve to highlight the relief and offset the deep recesses of the sculpture.

In the High Limit Baccarat Room, a dark wood paneled wall with recessed arches displays two large 36” mosaic urns. The mosaic is achieved with brightly colored antique glass and porcelain tessera inlayed on a neutral ground. One of the many original paintings commissioned for this property, hangs in the larger archway between the mosaic urns.
